As part of AFSA’s Federal Benefits Series, we are pleased to announce that AFSA Vice President for Retirees John Naland will offer a webinar entitled “Early and Mid-Career Retirement Planning”. This webinar will be offered via Zoom on Thursday, September 24 at 12 noon ET.

Naland will summarize the steps that early and mid-career employees should take to best position themselves for life after the Foreign Service. Topics will include:

  • What If You Resign Before You Can Retire?
  • Understanding Your Pension (aka Annuity)
  • Retirement Planning Resources
  • AFSA Services for Retirees
  • TSP: Stocks vs Bonds, Roth vs Traditional
  • Health Insurance and Life Insurance After Retirement
  • Divorce and FS Retirement Benefits
  • Social Security: When to Start, Will It Be There?
  • Prognosis on Future Benefits Cuts

There will also be the opportunity for Q&A.

Naland’s 29-year Foreign Service career included an assignment as the Director of the Office of Retirement in the Bureau of Human Resources. He was AFSA State Vice President from 1999 to 2001 and AFSA President from 2001 to 2003 and from 2007 to 2009. He retired from the Foreign Service in 2015. He is in his second term as AFSA Retiree VP, having been first elected in 2017.

Registrants will receive the Zoom link a few days before the event along with a downloadable copy of Naland’s checklist so that you can follow along during the presentation.

As with the majority of AFSA events, we will post the presentation on afsa.org/video shortly after the presentation in video format.
